2010 National Youth Leadership Training
Leadership is a key factor in the development of a Scout. One of the most valuable things Scouting offers a boy is the opportunity to be a leader and to develop his leadership skills. The National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course provides an exceptional opportunity for the boy to do just that.
NYLT is an intensive six day training experience for Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol leaders, Patrol leaders and other youth leaders as well as prospective troop/venturing leaders. The course uses a systematic approach to teach contemporary leadership skills, with an emphasis on both theory and practical application in a Scouting context. For the Scout who desires to be a better and more effective leader NYLT is an unparalleled opportunity.
Date & Location: August 8-13, 2010 at Rodney Scout Reservation in North East, Maryland. There will be an orientation session lasting about 2.5 hours schedule a month or so prior to the course.
Equipment & Supplies: Your regular field uniform is the official uniform of NYLT. Participants need to bring their normal camping gear, including tentage, for a week of camp, and will receive a detail equipment list upon registration. Patrol and troop gear and food are provided. The Council will provide, two t-shirts and notebook and upon successful completion a patch and certificate of completion.
Health & Safety: NYLT is operated in accordance with the National Health Standards of the Boy Scouts of America. All participants must be approved by their doctor prior to NYLT, using the new Annual Health and Medical Record form. A participant will not be allowed to begin the course without a completed Annual Health and Medical Record form.
Eligibility: To participate in NYLT, a Scout must be at least 13 years of age or have completed seventh grade and not reached the age of 18 if a Boy Scout or 21 if a Venturing Scout. A Boy Scout must hold at least the rank of First Class, be currently registered in a Boy Scout troop or Venturing Unit and have the approval of his Scoutmaster/Coach. All participants should be a current or prospective leader within their scouting unit. Completion of Troop Leadership Training (BSA publication #34306A) conducted by his Scoutmaster, is a helpful start to youth leadership training.
Because NYLT is an intensive training experience, participants should possess sufficient maturity, judgment and leadership potential to successfully complete the program. Each participant will be evaluated during the course on their Attitude (Be), Knowledge (Know) and Skills (Do).
Out-of-Council participants: Per current Del-Mar-Va Council policy, registrations for participants registered outside the Del-Mar-Va Council may not be accepted more than 60 days before the start of the course.
Registration: Registrations are made by completing the NYLT registration form, which includes the parent and unit leader's approval. Because of the benefits of this training to the troop, it is highly recommended that the troop consider paying all or part of the participant’s fee. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to 48 participants. In order to insure acceptance, early reservations are recommended. Once a course is filled, a waiting list will be started and applications will be moved into the course as spaces become available due to cancellation or non-payment of final fees by Scouts previously assigned to the course.
Payments/Refunds: Payments can be made online to the registration or by printing the invoice and mailing a check; all checks should be payable to "Del-Mar-Va Council" and have the registration number indicated on the check. The $50 deposit is non-refundable. Partial refunds may be granted with a written notice at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the course. Within 2 weeks of the start of the course, partial refunds will not be granted except for medical reasons with a doctor's note. Payment in full is due by the course orientation. |
