The Eagle Scout Service Project (ESSP) is Eagle Scout Requirement 5:
While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community. (The project must benefit an organization other than Boy Scouting.) A project proposal must be approved by the organization benefiting from the effort, your unit leader and unit committee, and the council or district before you start. You must use the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, No. 512-927, in meeting this requirement.

Project Purpose
In addition to providing service and fulfilling the part of the Scout Oath, “to help other people at all times,” one of the primary purposes of the Eagle Scout Service Project is to demonstrate or hone, or to learn and develop, leadership skills. Related to this are important lessons in project management and taking responsibility for a significant accomplishment.

Only the Official Workbook May Be Used
Eagle Scout candidates must use the official Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, No. 512-927, as produced by the Boy Scouts of America. The official fillable PDF version can be found at www.scouting.org. Although it is scceptable to copy and distribute the workbook, it must maintain the same appearance with nothing changed, added, or deleted.

Scout, parents or guardians, and leaders should read the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook thoroughly for information on choosing a project, restrictions, instructions on how to ue the workbook, fundraising, In addition to reading this entire workbook, the candidate and his parent or guardian should consult the Guide to Advancement, No. 33088, beginning with section 9.0.2.0, “The Eagle Scout Service Project.”

The completed Eagle Scout Service Project Proposal and the Fundraising Application (if required), signed by the candidate, unit leader, unit committee and beneficiary, may be presented for district approval by turning in to the registrar at the Scout Shop in Wilmington. The proposal will be routed to the Powder Mill District Eagle Vice-Chair for review and approval. The Eagle Vice-Chair will contact the Scout directly with any questions or concerns. The Scout will be notified once approved, and the signed proposal will be returned to the Scout Shop where it may be picked up.

Following are The 12 Steps from Life to Eagle applicable to the Eagle Scout Service Project:

2. Using the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, the candidate must select his Eagle service project and have the project concept approved by his unit leader, his unit committee, and the benefactor of the project, and reviewed and approved by the council or district advancement committee. The Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, No. 18-927D, must be used in meeting this requirement.

3. It is imperative that all requirements for the Eagle Scout rank except the board of review be completed prior to the candidate's 18th birthday. When all requirements except the board of review for the rank of Eagle, including the service project and Scoutmaster conference, have been completed, an Eagle Scout Rank Application must be filled out and sent to the council service center promptly.

5. The Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, properly filled out, must be submitted with the application.
