Seton Scout Naturalist Program for Scouts and Adult Leaders
August 5-11, Rodney Scout Reservation

Are you often at the back of the line on Scout hikes because you are looking at a Baltimore oriole, lifting rocks for salamanders, or taking out a field guide to identify a wildflower?

At Yellowstone, a naturalist leads you to the geysers, forests, and riversides, and involves you in learning the park’s natural and cultural history.  The Seton Scout Naturalist Program will enable you to be like a national park naturalist leading Scouts to interface with the natural world on nature-themed campouts.   You will also serve as the naturalist sage and instructor during any Scout event.  Participants of the program will emulate the qualities of Ernest Thompson Seton, famous naturalist, and one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America.

Scouts age 13 and older, Venture Crew members, or adults registered in Scouting unit can apply to get the training held at Rodney Scout Reservation from Sunday, August 5 to Saturday, August 11, 2018.  The fee for this week-long summer program is $455.  Scholarships, when they become available, will be announced on the program’s website.

The Seton Scout Naturalist Program will enable you to lead a camping trip that includes a nature trail hike, nocturnal walk, stream or pond study, wildlife observation 5-mile hike, and an environmentally-themed campfire.  An attractive fleece jacket, labeled “Seton Scout Naturalist,” will be awarded to all who complete the training and present a nature-themed weekend.  The program, limited to 20 participants, will be taught by a well-trained naturalist staff and visiting professionals from environmental fields.  Rodney Scout Reservation is located on the Chesapeake Bay.  The program will also focus on leading others in ways to conserve the Bay for future generations.

During the school year, a monthly invitational program will be offered to naturalist graduates to hone their knowledge and leadership skills. Natural areas great for Scout nature study will also be visited.
