The Del-Mar-Va Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), has announced that former Senator Brian Bushweller has been selected to receive the 2019 Kent Distinguished Citizen Award.  He will be honored at the annual awards dinner on Tuesday, October 29th at the Dover Downs Hotel and Conference Center.

Sen. Bushweller began his career representing Delaware educators through the Delaware State Education Association, the state’s largest union for teachers. In 1993, Bushweller was hired by then Governor Tom Carper to be his legislative liaison. He was elected to represent Delaware’s 17th district in the Delaware State Senate in 1999 and served until his retirement in January of 2019. As Senator, Brian accomplished many things for his constituents, including his role in the construction of the DE Turf Sports Complex, one of the premiere venues of its kind on the East Coast and a marquee attraction in Kent County.

For 33 years, the Distinguished Citizen Award event has been one of the Council’s premiere events.  The award is an annual recognition of those who give freely of their time and talents to improve the quality of life in Kent County.  Honorees are selected based on how the community has benefited from the individual’s contributions and the lasting effects those contributions have left on the community.  Past recipients have included Michael Scuse, Gregory V. Moore, Jennings and Lisa Hastings, D. Wayne Holden, Vice President Joseph R. Biden, Denis McGlynn, W.  Charles Paradee, John Burris, Bill and Mary Jane Willis, Bill Andrew, Ed Dulin, Brooks Banta, Jennifer Cohan and many more outstanding individuals.

The purpose of Boy Scouts of America is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and to develop personal fitness. Funds raised from the dinner will help fund Scouting programs, including camp scholarships, recruitment efforts, supplies and adult leader training.

Tickets to the event are $150 each, which includes a donation to the Boy Scouts.  If you have any questions about this event or about Scouting on Del-Mar-Va, please contact Chris Chapdelaine, Development Director, BSA, at cchapdelaine@dmvc.org or call 302-531-6730.
